On Your Feet Britain: taking a stand to get 500,000 office workers sitting less and moving more
The average UK office worker sits 10 hours each day, with almost 70% of sitting taking place at work and 73% only leaving their desk for toilet or tea breaks, according to a shocking new study by Plantronics. Growing scientific evidence continues to draw our attention to multiple health risks (including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and mental health) associated with excessive and prolonged sitting.
On Friday 29 April offices all over the country are signing up in their masses to encourage workers to vote with their feet for better health by taking part in On Your Feet Britain (OYF).
What is OYF?
On Your Feet Britain is a free event to encourage sedentary workers to participate in a variety of fun and simple activities in their workplace to allow them #SitLess and #MoveMore at work and, most importantly, avoid “binge sitting” habits. Now in its second year, OYF is run by the Get Britain Standing campaign in association with Active Working, a community interest company.
Put simply, On Your Feet Britain is a day which enables you to take music legend James Brown at his word, ‘get up offa that thing’ and convert sitting time to standing time by taking some simple actions. It’s easier than you think, just follow these tips:
- Stand during phone calls
- Stand and take a break from your computer every 30 minutes
- Use the stairs rather than the lift
- Have standing or walking meetings
- Eat your lunch away from your desk
- Walk to your colleague’s desk instead of phoning or emailing them
- Stand at the back of the room during presentations
Already we have over 1,000 companies signed up and expect over 500,000 office workers to wiggle and waggle it on Friday 29th April. It’s FREE to take part and we have prepared a comprehensive toolkit downloadable from our website so the event can be run by anybody anywhere.
