Selected Speakers biographies:
|Dr Amy Armstrong , Senior Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour, University of Bedfordshire
Amy is a Senior Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour at the University of Bedfordshire. She teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University and is Course Lead for the BSc in HRM with placement at the Milton Keynes campus.
Her research interests span the topics of compassion, resilience, wellbeing and engagement at work. Amy holds a First Class Bachelor’s degree, an MBA and a PhD. Her doctorate explored personal trauma (i.e. critical illness and bereavement) and the impact of those experiences on the professional lives of managers.
Amy is also a member of the Work and Organisational Psychology Group at Aston University and is involved in research with Engage for Success, a government-led movement which is seeking to improve engagement and wellbeing levels across the UK.
|David MacLeod , OBE, Co-Chair of Engage for Success Movement, Co-Author of ‘MacLeod Report’ on Employee Engagement
David is co-Chair of the Employee Engagement Task Force launched by the Prime Minister at Number 10 in 2011. He is a visiting Professor of the Cass Business School, a Fellow of the Ashridge Business School, the Institute of Marketing and of the RSA.
He co-authored the book entitled ‘The Extra Mile’ published by Pearson on the topic of employee engagement.David is co-author of the ‘Engaging for Success’ Report commissioned by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, described by the CMI as the definitive work on this subject. This follows an early career in marketing followed by becoming a CEO. David was awarded an OBE for services to Employee Engagement and Business in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2013.
|Kevin Matthews , Head of Marketing and Communications, Leathwaite International
Kevin has been shaping and steering the internal communication strategies for SME’s across the UK for over 20 years.His philosophy is simple: “If you want to truly engage a community you have to put people at the heart of everything you do, and within an SME this starts with the people in your organisation – your people drive your marketing and in many cases are your marketing.”
|Sue Hedaux, Director, ReThink
Sue has leveraged communication skills and tools throughout her retail career to engage individuals, teams and customers in her work as a pharmacist; a retail store and regional manager and as Head of Brand for a leading cosmetics and skincare brand.
As a Director in Rethink Productivity, Sue is sharing innovative, app based technology to help organisations engage and challenge their teams in a way that really works for colleagues and the business.
|Chloe Strauss , Managing Consultant, Gallup
Chloe is responsible for leading client account teams in driving change to positively affect business performance at client organisations and is currently leading project teams for the UK’s largest communications infrastructure company as well as a technology company headquartered in Madrid, whose IPO was one of the biggest in Europe.
Chloe enjoys bringing data to life and providing insights to leaders and managers which shape their outlook across a broad spectrum of people strategy matters. Her expertise and experience span from who to hire and promote through to employee engagement and customer experience change management programmes. Chloe is also a passionate strengths advocate and has an infectious enthusiasm around building strengths-based organisations.
She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first class degree MA (Hons.) in Business Studies and Economics, which included an exchange year at University at Autonoma Barcelona. After graduating, she gained international experience across Europe, Asia and the Americas, whilst working on the trading floors of HSBC. Subsequent qualifications include the CELTA Teaching certification. She is fluent in English and Spanish and conversational in French and German.
|Steven Phillips , Director, Ideas Unlimited
Steven’s career to date has included working on entrepreneurship for the UK government and international development with the UN before focusing on corporate leadership, building on his own experience as a leadership team member. As a director of Ideas Unlimited for 14 years, Steven’s clients have included John Lewis, Tesco, Camelot, RBS, Sky, PepisCo, Unilever, ATS-Euromaster, BT, EY, NHS, RWE-npower, Standard Life and Wolff-Olins.
This work centres on Steven advising and partnering with these major organisations at the most senior level, to develop innovative approaches to leadership and organisational development challenges – particularly through times of tough and turbulent change and renewal.
|Paula Dunne, Head of Engagement, Wellbeing & Diversity Santander
Her career has primarily been in financial services, taking her from traditional branch and business banking through to credit risk and over ten years in marketing and communications.
Her current role combines all that experience with a passion for all things that involve people. In 2015 Santander achieved a listing as one of the Sunday Times Top 25 Best Companies to work for.
|Jane Marsh is Group People Director at innocent drinks.
She qualified as a solicitor in 1993 and specialised in employment and pension law in both private practice and inhouse roles before moving into the HR profession in 2010.
She worked as UK&I HR Director for IBM before moving to innocent in 2014.
|Kieran Grundy, HR Director, SNC-Lavalin
Kieran is a Group HR Business Partner within SNC-Lavalin (formally known as Interfleet). SNC-Lavalin is one of the largest engineering and construction groups in the world. In 2011, SNC-Lavalin acquired international rail consultancy Interfleet and on January 1st 2016, it changed its name to SNC-Lavalin and fully-integrated with the brand.
|Mike Thompson, Director of Early Careers, Barclays Bank
Mike has been working in Barclays for over 24 years in a variety of frontline and support leadership roles across the business.His past five years have been in HR, where he has built up extensive experience implementing management and leadership development programmes, employee engagement programmes and more recently, managing the development of Barclays learning and development curriculum.His recent projects include the roll out of the Leadership Excellence Programme across RBB (retail and business banking) and the delivery of the “Be the Change” employee engagement programme also across the global retail bank. Mike currently manages a number of award winning early careers programmes including the Barclays apprenticeship programme and Barclays degree programme that won the CIPD Best Talent Programme 2012. He is passionate about developing young talent and tackling diversity and equality issues as well as providing meaningful solutions that address youth unemployment.
|Beth James, Communications and Development Manager, hungryhouse
Beth James has a broad range of experience in international environments (Sydney, Berlin) and currently splits her time between running brand projects and driving the employee engagement strategy for leading online food delivery portal hungryhouse. Beth has a strong brand marketing background, which has helped influence her unique approach to employee engagement. In 2014 she developed and implemented a successful program which transformed the internal culture and dramatically increased employee motivation and connection.
She is passionate about humanising the approach to engagement, and believes that companies have an obligation to create the conditions in which people can flourish.
|Den Carter, Internal Communications Manager Virgin Trains
Den recently introduced a collaborative enterprise social network at the UK’s leading train operating company, Virgin Trains. He has previously worked in employee engagement roles at other major brands, and specialises in using digital technology to build collaborative cultures in businesses.
He is also on the board of directors for a children’s charity which supports the relief of sickness and preservation of health among children and young people, where he is pioneering the use of mobile technology for health workers in remote areas of Cambodia.
