Dr. Emma Parry, Reader in Human Resource Management, Cranfield University School of Management
Dr Emma Parry is a Reader in Human Resource Management at Cranfield University School of Management. Her research focuses on the influence of context on managing people, particularly national context, demographic change and technological advances. Emma manages “Cranet” a Network of business schools conducting comparative research into HRM practices and is a co-Director of “5C” a global network that researches career experiences in different national cultures. She has undertaken a wide-range of research into HRM, for clients such as the Ministry of Defence, the NHS and CIPD. This has included a large piece of work on HR Technology for the CIPD. Emma is also the Director of the International Executive Doctorate (DBA) programme at Cranfield. Emma is the co-author of “Managing people in the Contemporary Context” and has produced numerous publications, including several in the area of HR technology.
Paget Miles serves as the Human Capital Management Sales Manager for the EMEA region at IBM. He has over 12 years of experience within the HCM marketplace, helping organisations leverage SaaS and Cloud-based applications. Mr. Miles has worked extensively on global deployments of cloud applications and is heavily involved in projects across Europe for both mid-market and enterprise business. During his tenure at IBM, he has also focused on developing the next generation of User Interfaces that provide a single access point across multiple client applications. Mr. Miles holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management.
Mark has 25 years’ experience working with companies to improve business efficiency and service. Today Mark works directly with UK leading organisations such as John Lewis, M&S and Sainsbury’s, where Transversal’s knowledge solutions are deployed to support their contact centre agents and ecommerce websites.
As Business Development Director at Transversal, Mark also leads the company’s drive to provide HR knowledge solutions to give employees intuitive assistance when trying to find answers to their HR questions. Mark says, “the lack of organised and accessible knowledge is one of the biggest obstacles to employees self-serving and increasing business efficiency; go to most HR portals and you’ll see what I mean, poor search, masses of documents, a lack of intuitive help – it’s no wonder that HR gets bogged down in repetitive work whilst employees get inconsistent information.”

Karl was appointed as Director of People in March 2006. He is responsible for the people strategy in this high volume, high profile and evolving UK wide business.
With 80 million customers a year looked after by 200 teams working in partner ‘franchisee’ brands, (such as Waitrose, Starbucks, KFC, BK, WH Smiths, Days Inn or Shell/BP forecourts) the HR challenge is both unique and rewarding and involves the development of a unifying culture based on service, effective leadership, strong tools and the expanding capability of teams.
Prior to joining Welcome Break Karl gained retail and hospitality experience in TGI Fridays, Pret a Manger and Mitchells and Butlers and has undertaken a number of leadership roles in both Learning and Development and strategic HR.
As Future Media Lead at BSkyB, Mirage focused on market intelligence to inform and influence strategic decision making across Sky channels and services. Prior to that he launched and headed up Sky’s first official partnership and collaboration project as Head of Developer’s Programme.
Throughout his career he has worked with leading brands and clients such as Saatchi & Saatchi, Ernst & Young, Channel 4, BBC, Comic Relief and Microsoft.
Blending great ideas with technology and inspiring future talent is his passion and has delivered Digital strategy, learning and development programmes across the world for clients such Saatchi & Saatchi, Channel4, Mediacom, IPA, ANFO.
In recognition The RSA awarded a Fellowship for his contribution to the Marketing and Communications industries.
He now combines many years of senior level commercial experience and digital innovation, as the Group Talent & Technology Specialist within HR Shared Services at TalkTalk to encourage connected thinking, drive internal collaboration, ideas generation that will deliver continued commercial growth and target top talent both internally and externally.
Jonny Gifford is research adviser at the CIPD specialising in employee engagement, employee relations and organisational culture. He joined CIPD in 2012, having previously worked as principal researcher at Roffey Park Institute and previously research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies. Current interests include dispute resolution, uses of social and mobile technology (e.g. for collaboration, employee voice and flexible working) and the role HR functions play in corporate responsibility. Jonny has an MA in Social Research and Comparative Labour Studies from Warwick University and a BA in Social Anthropology from Sussex University.
Catherine has 15 years public sector experience in Human Resource management. She is currently Head of Organisation Design and Pay Strategy within Birmingham City Council, this is a corporate role responsible for developing the strategy for Organisation Design, Pay and pay progression within the Council.
Catherine is a fellow member of the CIPD, has a business degree from Aston Business School and an LLM in Employment Law which focused on Equal Pay.
James Stringer, Director, HR Information, Unilever
James joined Unilever in 2000 and initially built information capabilities for the HR function in the UK business.
Since 2005, Unilever has undertaken a programme to globalise its HR function, processes, systems and information, and since 2007 James has headed up HR information capability globally for Unilever. Achievements during that period include:

Lisa is Head of People Services at Home Group, a social enterprise and a charity with a turnover of over £300m, is one of the UK’s largest providers of high quality housing and supported housing services and products. Home’s role is to provide general needs housing and supported housing services targeted towards helping some of society’s most vulnerable people take control of their own lives.
Lisa is a member of the organisation business leadership team and accountable for the Group Human Resource IS systems, Recruitment, Payroll, Administration and Employment and Skills departments. Since joining in 2009, Lisa has led the implementation of the HRIS system and self-service strategy across Home Group, including expenses, learning and performance appraisal; leading to being winners of the 2012 greatest organisational impact through technology award and finalists at the 2012 North England CIPD Awards for change management project of the year.
