Summary

The changing nature of work, unpredictable environmental factors and the tightening of health and safety penalties mean that reviewing and strengthening your health and wellbeing strategy is now more important than ever.

There is a wealth of evidence that suggests a positive link between the introduction of health and wellbeing strategies in the workplace and improved business performance. However, according to CIPD’s recent Absence Management Survey 2016, ‘nearly three-fifths report that their organisation is much more reactive than proactive regarding well-being’.

Awareness of mental health and stress issues is at a new all-time peak, with an estimated 1 in 6 people of working age being diagnosed with a mental health condition. The correlation between physical wellbeing and mental wellbeing is becoming more pertinent with statistics indicating that out of all employees who have a physical health condition, 1 in 5 also reported having a mental health issue. The focus of this conference will address the key challenges face by organisations in driving the health at work agenda forward both from a mental and physical health perspective.

CHAIR – Louise Aston. Wellbeing Director, Business in the Community
Louise Aston began her career in textile design, working as a fashion buyer for Marks and Spencer. She transitioned into health campaigning by designing a children’s sun protective swimwear range for an award-winning Department of Health skin cancer prevention campaign. As Creative Director at COI, she led high profile public sector campaigns including 5 A DAY, ‘Don’t Give Up Giving Up’ and FRANK.
Since joining Business in the Community as Business Action on Health’s Campaign Director in February 2007, she has produced groundbreaking research, developed practical tools, by business for business, forged partnerships with Government Departments and secured the commitment of UK’s top companies to boardroom reporting on employee health and wellbeing by 2011.
Andrew Spells, Head of Wellbeing, British Council
Andrew Spells is Head of Wellbeing at the British Council, a global organisation with 1000 employees in the UK and a further 9000 in 110 countries around the world. The British Council aims to create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide.

Andrew’s main area of focus currently includes running a global wellbeing campaign, enhancing support for staff working for the British Council in fragile states, highlighting and addressing mental health and workplace stress issues, and improving management of sickness absence. Andrew has worked in a variety of operational and HR roles in the British Council in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the UK.
Emma Mamo, Head of Workplace Wellbeing, MIND
Emma is Head of Head of Workplace Wellbeing at MIND. Emma joined Mind in 2007 and since 2010 has led MIND’s campaigning for mentally healthy workplaces – playing a pivotal role in thought leadership to position mental health in the workplace as a key priority for employers and Government.

Emma has led culture change through engagement with employers, health and safety professionals, HR audiences and Government on mental health in the workplace and back to work support for people with mental health problems. She also supports networks of employers and stakeholders to share best practice and develop business to business peer support. Emma has worked in the disability sector since 2005 and previously worked for Mencap, the learning disability charity.
Helen Houghton, Head of Health, Wellbeing and Occupatonal Health, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals
Helen is the lead for Health and Wellbeing at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBH). Her background is public health and health promotions where she has 14 years experience in the field.

Helen previously worked for public health in Nottinghamshire for six years with the portfolio for workplace health. In this role, Helen developed the ‘Wellbeing at Work Award Scheme’ and supported a vast number of organisations both large and small to achieve the ‘Gold Standard’. Helen is currently using this expertise to transform the health and wellbeing of staff at DBH.
Lisa McGrevy, Divisional HSQ Manager, Wincanton
As the Divisional HSEQ Manager for Retail and Consumer, Lisa leads the strategic and operational delivery of safety for the sector which covers operation for major multiple retailers, consumers, grocery, general merchandising and home & DIY customers including many household names.

As safety lead in this sector, Lisa’s role is to ensure that Wincanton deliver their customers’ expectations for the highest standards in safety, and to set Wincanton apart by educating, raising awareness and engaging teams in an active safety culture.
Lisa is also responsible for the management of the outsourced Group Occupational provider and the award winning Group Occupational Health and Wellbeing programmes including the HR Excellence Award for Wellbeing 2016 and the St Gobain Wellbeing Award 2015.
Susan Gee, Head of Occupational Health and Wellbeing, Yorkshire Water
Susan is a commercially astute, innovative and highly influential Occupational Health Manager with comprehensive experience gained within public and private sector roles. Susan was previously employed for 16 years at Bradford Metropolitan District Council as Head of Occupational Health & Safety,

Susan is currently a visiting lecturer at Leeds Beckett University where her specialist subject is Sickness Absence Management and Wellbeing. Susan has a BSc (Hons) in Public Health (OH) an MA in Health Care Law and an MSc in leadership, Management and Change in Health and Social Care.
Clare Forshaw, Head of Centre for Health, HSE
Clare is involved in assisting both government and individual businesses in achieving their goals in health risk management. She has pioneered the Complete Worker Health Solutions model to allow accessible and targeted solutions.
She is actively involved in various industry working groups and cross government committees to influence and evolve understanding and approaches to improving health through the workplace.
With 20 years’ experience in workplace health management working for HSE, Clare is an associate member of the faculty of Occupational Hygiene and Health Ergonomics.
John Green, HSE Director European Hub, Laing O’Rourke
John has worked in the oil, gas, petrochemical. electronics, heavy engineering, construction and aviation sectors and has 38 years’ experience of industrial safety. He is recognised and respected as someone who does safety differently and as a major force for change in how industrial safety is delivered.

He has spent periods living and working overseas within the UAE, Iran, Europe, Hong Kong , parts of the USA and has recently returned from a 4 year spell in Australia covering Laing O’Rourke operations in the southern hemisphere.
He has held senior positions with Motorola, British Airways and Board level positions with Alfred McAlpine and Laing O’Rourke. John holds qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety, Integrated Pollution Management, Change Management, Psychology, Law and Philosophy.
Steffan Groch, Chair of Health and Safety Lawyer’s Association
Steffan is Chair of the UK Health and Safety Lawyers Association and speaks regularly at IOSH, SHP and other industry events. He is also a committee member of the IOSH national construction group.
Steffan has advised companies, directors and managers in respect of a variety of health, safety and environment prosecutions brought by the Health and Safety Executive, Local Authorities and the CPS. Steffan, in conjunction with his team, advises proactively on health and safety systems and procedures, with a particular emphasis on corporate manslaughter, directors’ duties and FFI.
Steffan and his team continue to be actively involved in ground breaking cases, examples of which include R v HTM, R v Porter and R v Lion Steel,
